Photos: Causeway Coastal Route
5 September ’15
Photo taken at: Ballycastle Sea Front Belfast had the best internet speeds of anywhere we stayed, so we spent most of our time there catching up on work, keeping our tourism to the weekend. On Saturday we drove north along the Causeway Coastal Route to the Giant’s Causeway, stopping a few times along the way to photograph the view. We stopped at the Carrick-A-Rede Rope Bridge, but decided to skip it because it was around... read more.

On Wednesday of week 4 we crossed the island again from Donegal to Belfast. Northern Ireland is part of the UK and uses Pounds so we had to pick up a third currency.

Photo taken at: Kilcar We spent Sunday-Wednesday of week four in Kilcar, in County Donegal. Sunday was spent driving North from Galway. We stopped in a town called Mullaghmore for dinner, and got some photos of the marina and people swimming in the cold water. On Monday morning while enjoying my coffee outside I had to get a shot of the smoke from the chimneys, there were a few turf or coal fires burning most... read more.

It is a very “Touristy” thing to incessantly photograph sheep while traveling in and around Ireland. However, as I walked along the cliffs of Slieve League at this particular point, this sheep was staring very intently at me while I passed. That, in addition to the lovely backdrop, seemed like too precious a photo opportunity to pass up. After snapping the offending photo, I looked up to find two gentlemen smiling in my direction. They... read more.

Photo taken at: Galway, Ireland We spent the third week in Galway, from Sunday to Sunday. Owing to the relatively reliable internet at our Airbnb, the proximity of downtown with a plethora of live music, and the amount of work I missed driving around the southwest in week two, we spent most of week three working during the day and going out in the evenings. We went twice to a pub called Fox’s Bar and... read more.

This photo was taken the morning of our one-night stay on the smallest of the Aran Islands, Inis Oirr (pronounced and spelled Inisheer in English).
I try to get at least 15 minutes of meditation in each morning. This was especially easy to do accompanied by the sounds of the ocean and a cup of tea.

Photo taken at: Inis Oirr, Arann Islands After the ferry tour of the Cliffs, we took another Ferry to Inisheer. This is the smallest of the Aran islands, and the site of our airbnb for Saturday between weeks 2 and 3. After watching for the dolphin who we discovered lives near the dock at the island, we checked into our room and walked westward looking for a good sunset over the next island over. http://travel.drogers.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/11936127_806664402787478_236033810_n.mp4... read more.
Photos: Week 2, Limerick
21 August ’15
Here are just a few random photos from week 2 that didn’t fit in any of the specific sights or sites we saw. These ruins were right along the road to Cashel, and the spot where we had our first car scare, scraping the undercarriage on a rock. It’s been fine since then so no worries. Sarah wanted to climb into the tower, but it had an iron gate over the doorway, even though it... read more.

On our first jaunt into the city of Limerick, Dennis and I visited what was the Milk Market, a place where food and craft vendors gather under a large tent in the middle of the city to sell their goods on Saturdays. Most of the vendors had packed up and gone by the time we got there, but there were still several food and coffee vendors, as well as customers sitting at picnic tables. Dennis... read more.
Photo taken at: O’Riordans Bar Abbeyfeale On our way back from Killarney and the Gap of Dunloe, we stopped in a little town called Abbeyfeale. It was known to me by name from the previously mentioned Irish Lion restaurant in Bloomington, IN. I just had to stop here and get some Mutton Pie. Well they didn’t have mutton, so I was going to get Beef and Guinness, which they were also out of. We ended... read more.

The Airbnb we stayed during week 2 was excellent except that the internet was a little slow for both of us to work, especially if our hosts were home and also using it. I found however that, having my laptop setup on a tray in front of the window, I could see a herd of cattle grazing in a flowery field whenever I looked up from my screen waiting for something to load or save.... read more.

Photo taken at: The Hunt Museum, Limerick We drove into Limerick on Sunday the 16th to see the Milk Market and the Hunt Museum. The Market was winding down and I didn’t take any photos there, but I only had my phone so what I did get in the museum isn’t very good. Before the museum we stopped at a pub called Cobblestone Joe’s for lunch, and I got a quick photo of the bar.... read more.

I’ve mostly described our experience in Kilcullen in previous posts, particularly the first day, the Bridge Community, and various remarks about the adventures of relying on public transportation.
Next we’re renting a car for the remainder of the trip, which will prove to be its own adventure.

I snapped this photo with my phone while hurrying to catch a bus in Dublin. I found it interesting (and somehow heart-warming) to see a traffic light designed specifically for cyclists. Very considerate of them.

Unlike in the states, where everything except Guinness (and sometimes even that) is served in random identically-shaped 12oz glasses, here they seem to keep a stock of glasses for each specific brand of beer.

Our last stop of the day Wednesday was the Old Jameson Distillery. It proved to be not quite as photo-friendly as the Guinness Storehouse, not having the advertising and pint-pouring section, but being a guided tour it was more interactive. And of course the taste-testing and free Jameson + Ginger at the end of the tour made it all worthwhile. The hardest part was deciding which gift shop items just weren’t worth hauling around for... read more.

Although they’ll actually appear on the blog some time later, when I get time to write about our adventures or get photos uploaded. Photo taken at: Kilcullen Town The village of Kilcullen is divided by the River Liffey, which runs through Dublin. Historically Kilcullenbridge was the town on the east side of the Liffey, connected by this beautiful old bridge. On Google maps the town is actually marked as Kilcullen and Kilcullenbridge, though the addresses say Kilcullen everywhere as far as I can tell. On Sunday the 8th we walked down to the village again and walked through... read more.
On the recommendation of our Airbnb host, we had our first meal in Ireland at Bardons in Kilcullen. My fish came with a side called “Mash and Veg” which was carrots and broccoli perfectly cooked, and this fist-sized chunk of mashed potato with scallions, lightly fried. As I said on instagram, it was reminiscent of an appetizer served at the Irish Lion in Bloomington called “Blarney Puffballs.” The materials are similar but puffballs are nearer... read more.

Saw these really sweet banners after getting our first passport stamps in the Dublin airport. We’ll probably rent cars at some point, but for now we’re sticking to busses and leaving navigating these weird reverse streets to the professionals. I had thought I was mentally prepared to drive on the left side of the road, until I saw the divided highways going the other way, with ramps on the left and everything. I’m sure it... read more.

Hello all, If you’re finding this site you probably know who we are, but for everyone else, I’m Dennis Rogers, and this is a blog chronicling my trip to Ireland with my sister, Sarah Rogers. We’re leaving Indiana by way of Chicago-Ohare on August 7th, and returning five weeks later. We plan on staying no more than a week in any one spot, so we’ll get to see a wide variety of scenery.
