Photos: Rock of Cashel

On Tuesday of the second week, we drove down to County Tipperary to see The Rock of Cashel. This set of churches and tower sit atop a rock and are visible from quite a ways off, making it a popular tourist stop. We heard more than a few non-Irish voices, and at least one of the other tours was in English and French.

Article about the Queen’s visit.

Nearby are the ruins of Hore Abbey. We were going to get a closer look but there was no good turn-off and the road away from the Rock didn’t pass by it.

Unfortunately there’s quite a lot of restoration happening around the original smaller Cormac’s Chapel, but we did get to see the inside of the chapel and tour the rest of the site.

A fascinating feature of the cemetery surrounding the ruins is the Scully Cross.
